Seek out rainforests, swimming holes, and cays. Puerto Rico, the Caribbean’s island of enchantment, earns its nickname in spades. Even though Icacos brims with weekend sunbathers and snorkelers, it’s almost always quieter than the mainland. Those looking to stray from the sand can follow a small network of nature trails through dense thickets of coastal scrub and sea-grape trees. Spot iguanas, shore-dwelling birds, and anole lizards on dry land. Just offshore, the 29,000-acre Cordillera Reef Nature Reserve protects sea turtles, hermit crabs, and colorful reef fish. Remember to bring your own snorkel – the island maintains a rustic charm, meaning there are no permanent facilities like shops or restaurants. Take a Dip in the Blue Pond Puerto Rico’s only mountain range, the Cordillera Central stretches nearly 100 miles across the island’s interior, giving rise to a surprisingly dense network of natural swimming holes. In the Carite State Forest, an hour’s drive south of San Juan, towering bamboo thickets and guava trees surround Charco Azul’s deep, clear-blue water.
