Even though Icacos brims with weekend sunbathers and snorkelers, it’s almost always quieter than the mainland. Those looking to stray from the sand can follow a small network of nature trails through dense thickets of coastal scrub and sea-grape trees. Spot iguanas, shore-dwelling birds, and anole lizards on dry land. Just offshore, the 29,000-acre Cordillera Reef Nature Reserve protects sea turtles, hermit crabs, and colorful reef fish. Remember to bring your own snorkel – the island maintains a rustic charm, meaning there are no permanent facilities like shops or restaurants. Take a Dip in the Blue Pond Puerto Rico’s only mountain range, the Cordillera Central stretches nearly 100 miles across the island’s interior, giving rise to a surprisingly dense network of natural swimming holes. In the Carite State Forest, an hour’s drive south of San Juan, towering bamboo thickets and guava trees surround Charco Azul’s deep, clear-blue water.
